User retention is the degree to which users continue returning to and receiving value from a product over time after their initial use or activation.
A daily collaboration product might measure whether activated workspaces return and collaborate in later weeks. An annual tax product should not expect daily usage.
Retention needs to match the natural frequency of the job the product performs.
Engagement describes depth or frequency of use. Retention asks whether the user continues coming back across time periods.
A retained user can have low-frequency but highly valuable usage.
Activation focuses on the first meaningful value milestone. Retention shows whether that value continues.
A monthly product should not be judged by day-seven usage alone.
Good-fit segments can disappear inside a weak overall number.
Reminders cannot create missing product value.
User retention asks: after users experience the product, do they keep coming back because the value continues to matter?
