A product funnel is a sequence of measurable user steps toward a meaningful product outcome, used to identify where users progress, drop off, or fail to complete a journey.
For a collaboration product, an activation funnel might be:
Create workspace → Create first project → Invite teammate → Complete first collaborative task
Analytics can show the percentage of users who reach each step and where the largest loss occurs.
A user flow represents possible interaction paths. A funnel measures whether users complete a selected sequence of behaviors.
One flow can contain branches that do not fit neatly into a single funnel.
A customer journey captures broader context, touchpoints, questions, and experience. A funnel reduces part of that journey into measurable progression.
A funnel should make the critical progression clearer, not reproduce every click.
Different segments can have valid alternative journeys.
Removing useful friction can increase risk or reduce trust later.
A product funnel asks: how many eligible users progress through these key behaviors, and where does meaningful progression break down?
