Product activation is the point or set of early behaviors where a new user first experiences meaningful product value and becomes more likely to continue using the product.
For a team collaboration product, signup is not necessarily activation.
A more meaningful activation event might be creating a workspace, inviting at least one teammate, and completing a first shared task. Those actions show that the user experienced the collaborative value the product promises.
Signup tells you someone entered the product. Activation tells you they reached an early value milestone.
A product can have high signup volume and weak activation if users never reach the useful part.
Retention measures whether users continue returning over time. Activation focuses on the early behaviors that make continued use more likely.
Strong teams validate whether their chosen activation event actually predicts retention.
Registration alone may happen before the user receives any value.
The event should represent value, not instrumentation convenience.
Early conversion should not create bad-fit users or future churn.
Product activation asks: what early behavior tells us the user has actually experienced the value they came for?
