A beautiful settings screen can still be poor product design if the permissions model is confusing or the user cannot recover from an error.

What is the product design process?

There is no single mandatory sequence, but a useful loop looks like this:

  1. Understand the product problem and user context.
  2. Review existing product behavior, constraints, and design patterns.
  3. Map the current and desired flows.
  4. Explore multiple solution directions.
  5. Prototype enough of the experience to make assumptions testable.
  6. Include important non-happy-path states.

Why product context matters

Most product design does not happen on a blank canvas.

Does a product designer need to do research?
